The New Self-Care Sunday: Swap Your Spa Day for a Paintbrush

For years, Self-Care Sunday has looked pretty much the same.

A face mask that burns just enough to make you question your life choices.

Cucumber slices balanced precariously on your eyes.

A candle labeled "Ocean Breeze Serenity" that somehow smells like expensive laundry detergent.

Maybe a massage if you're feeling fancy.

And listen—I have nothing against a good spa day. As a physician, I'm fully in favor of anything that helps people slow down, decompress, and reconnect with themselves.

But lately, I've been thinking that self-care might need a little makeover.

What if instead of spending another Sunday using product after product, scrolling social media while a clay mask dries into concrete on your face, you picked up a paintbrush instead?

Welcome to the new Self-Care Sunday.

Why Traditional Self-Care Isn't Always Enough

Somewhere along the way, self-care became another item on our to-do list.

Book the facial.

Buy the bath bomb.

Schedule the massage.

Take the perfectly curated picture for Instagram.

Ironically, the pursuit of relaxation can sometimes become stressful.

Real self-care isn't about checking a box. It's about creating space for your mind to rest.

That's one reason creative hobbies have become increasingly popular among adults looking to reduce stress and improve mental wellness. Activities like painting, crafting, journaling, and coloring encourage us to focus on the present moment rather than tomorrow's deadlines or yesterday's frustrations.

In other words, they help us quiet the mental tabs we forgot to close.

The Unexpected Wellness Benefits of Paint by Number

I'll admit it.

The first time someone suggested a paint-by-number kit as self-care, I pictured a dusty craft project from my grandmother's attic.

I was wrong.

Very wrong.

Paint by number for adults has experienced a major resurgence in recent years, and for good reason. It combines creativity, mindfulness, and accomplishment into one surprisingly therapeutic activity.

Unlike traditional painting, there is no pressure to be artistic.

No blank canvas staring at you like a college admissions essay.

No inner critic whispering, "That tree looks like broccoli."

The numbers guide the process. You simply follow along one section at a time.

The result is a relaxing experience that allows your brain to focus on something simple and enjoyable without requiring perfection.

And frankly, many of us could use a break from trying to be perfect.

Self-Care That Doesn't Wash Down the Drain

Here's the thing about bubble baths.

They're lovely.

For approximately twenty-two minutes.

Then the water gets cold, the candle burns out, and you're right back to reality.

Creative self-care leaves you with something tangible.

Every Sunday painting session becomes part of a larger project. Week after week, your artwork grows. Eventually, you finish a piece that you can display in your home, office, or favorite reading nook.

That's a different kind of satisfaction.

Instead of consuming an experience, you're creating something.

There's something deeply rewarding about looking at a finished painting and thinking, "I made that."

Even if the numbers did most of the heavy lifting, the benefits on the brain and your mental health are the same.

Why Paint by Number Is Perfect for Busy Adults

One of the biggest barriers to self-care is time.

People assume they need an entire day at the spa, a wellness retreat, or a weekend getaway to truly relax. Let's not even talk about the expense!

Paint by number works because it fits into real life.

You can paint for fifteen minutes.

Thirty minutes.

An hour if you're feeling ambitious.

There's no need to block off your entire schedule.

The canvas patiently waits for you between sessions without sending passive-aggressive reminders.

As someone who spends my days helping people manage stress, I appreciate wellness practices that are realistic. Sustainable self-care is often less about grand gestures and more about consistent habits.

A quiet hour with a paintbrush can be surprisingly powerful.

The Joy of Painting Art That Reflects You

One of the most exciting developments in the paint-by-number world is the growing availability of diverse artwork.

Today, you can find Black paint by number kits featuring natural hairstyles, cultural imagery, musicians, dancers, powerful portraits, and scenes that celebrate Black beauty and identity.

Representation matters in creative spaces.

There is something meaningful about spending time creating artwork that feels familiar and personal. When the finished piece reflects your culture, experiences, or community, the connection goes beyond simple decoration.

The painting becomes part of your story.

And that's a level of self-care that no cucumber slice has ever achieved.

Creating Your Own Self-Care Sunday Ritual

If you're ready to swap one Sunday scroll-fest for something more restorative, consider creating a weekly painting ritual.

Light a candle.

Put on your favorite playlist.

Brew a cup of tea or coffee.

Silence the notifications.

Then spend some uninterrupted time with your canvas.

No pressure.

No deadlines.

No performance.

Just color, creativity, and a little peace.

You might be surprised by how quickly your shoulders relax and your mind settles.

The New Prescription for Relaxation

As a physician, I believe self-care should support both mental and emotional wellness.

Sometimes that means exercise.

Sometimes it means sleep.

Sometimes it means therapy.

And sometimes it means sitting at your kitchen table on a Sunday afternoon, paintbrush in hand, creating something beautiful one tiny numbered section at a time.
